I read a wonderful blog post by Stephen Hough the other day in which he suggests that you don’t have to play an instrument or compose music to be a musician. To pay attention to music and listen to it is enough to make you a musician. Mr. Hough is a concert pianist and composer who affirms that music is for everybody. I was delighted to think of all the families and children in Kindermusik classes and at home, who are paying attention to music, bringing it into their lives everyday through singing, dancing, and playing. I remember all those brave parents and grandparents who claimed they couldn’t sing but sang along in class with great enthusiam because of their love for their children. And we always sound beautiful singing together! Love and attention make us musicians! And, in Kindermusik class, it’s through that love for music that we give our children the delicious and nourishing food that feeds their natural hunger for learning and growth.

Here’s a link to Stephen Hough playing his own arrangement of Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s My Favorite Things from “The Sound of Music.”

New classes are starting the week of February 6th, with several other shorter sessions in the meantime. Join us for a free preview class and see how you and your children can be musicians, too!
